We chatted recently with Guy Roberts from VADA in Pitt Street, one of Auckland’s foremost edgy hair salons. Having always commanded an enviable reputation within the hair industry, VADA has just made the game changing decision to join the Wella family!
Tell what was it about Wella Professionals that personally attracted you to join the family?
I was impressed by the business support that Wella offers to partner salons and I love the fact that the Wella Education Programme gives my team the opportunity to further develop their skills. Of course, product is key and I love the consistent quality results of Wella Professionals colour.
Of the many Wella Professionals brands which will Vada be focussing on and why?
We adore the new colour range, new Koleston Perfect with ME+ which recently launched at the start of February. We have seen exceptional results every time, which is really exciting for both us and our clients.
We are also adding the System Professional hair care range to our offering. The EnergyCode™ Speed Mapping service has changed the way we are consulting our clients, enabling us to offer a fully tailored service, unique to their individual hair needs. The results have been truly impressive.
So what are the products that you most enthusiastic about?
System Professional Liquid Hair is such an incredible treatment. The amino-rich liquid works to reconstruct the hair fibres, like a ‘refiller’ for broken bonds – which is a hair dressers dream! The EnergyCode™ system is a brilliant consultation tool for prescribing the exact need for unique hair cases, which provide options for treatment that we probably wouldn’t have considered before.
The team are also loving experimenting with the Color Fresh CREATE colour product range. Especially around Pride and Mardi Gras season, my team have been sending some incredible colour creations through the salon doors! The shades are fully intermixable, providing endless colour creations.
This month will see the introduction of KOLESTON PERFECT, revolutionising professional hair colour. Are you excited to try it out?
I’ve been very lucky to have had a little ‘sneak preview’ and play with the new Koleston Perfect, ahead of its launch – and I love the results! I am very much looking forward to working with the new shades and seeing our clients’ reactions to the new tech, and results™ technology provides less damage to coloured hair over time. Damage can be a real concern for clients and often holds customers back from ‘saying yes’ to a colour service; so hopefully the launch will unlock some interesting opportunities.
What influences you the most, when making the decision to change suppliers?
I’d have to say the Wella community was a real draw. The salon support is exceptional and education opportunities are brilliant, it really is a ‘Wella Family’. At the end of the day, we want to deliver the best results for clients and I have loved their reactions to the new Wella colour.
How important is education and support that Wella Professionals can offer your staff?
At Vada, education is of the utmost importance and doesn’t just come in the traditional sense of practical in-salon sessions and theory. With social media, training can be accessed any time and I am all for my staff researching new techniques. Our mannequins are always set up out the back room for the next idea and the Wella education programme has some great quick techniques, and product knowledge to learn from; our team is always up-skilling.
As you have now successfully run your business for many years, what is your advice for survival?
Things come and go. You must expect the unexpected and learn to adapt and change quickly, and be open to it!. Learn to be patient… things always take longer than planned and ask for advice when you are unsure. Remember clients have chosen your salon for a reason, they are the most important element.
Have you any hair trend predictions for 2019 that you can share?
I’m seeing a desire for choppy-chic bobs, moody blondes and vintage reds. It’s an exciting time for colour and I don’t think that will change in 2019! We are really looking forward to using the new Koleston Perfect with ME+ to create these looks.
What does 2019 hold in store for yourself and Vada?
We have some really exciting things planned, including a little change up with our floor space. We have great talent in the team, so are hopeful to have some finalist in hair competitions throughout the year too.
Personally… I am going to be zen. Work life balance is very important to me, so I plan to find an equal mix of spending time with my children and venturing back into a personal passion of mine – training hairdressers. That aside, it would also be nice to play more football!
